Leaflet no. 5
This week’s leaflet tea tastes like … raisins, dill, deli coffee, Jamaican Jerk seasoning, and cranberries
Hello, everyone.
Tea Leaf Tech is a process in which I brew a cup of the Beobab.tree’s blend (its bark, leaves, its fruit, and a dapple of honey—of course!), which is a way to introduce settling and warmth into the day’s spiral of events. During this time of sipping and slowness, ideas and images collect at the bottom of the cup. The readings of the tea leaves laid to rest on ceramic glaze will be the basis of Wednesday’s leaflets. From here, I invite you to sit with your own cuppa and peruse what sensations this week’s tea blend has to offer.
Enjoying:
Shaboo Strikes Back - Don Leisure (psychedelic sound collage of jazz, hip-hop, reggae and Bollywood) this is a beat tape full of good samples and talented guests, and if you like J Dilla, hard to imagine you not, you should venture a listening.
STR4TASFEAR - STR4TA (experimental jazz & funk, of outer space) …the basslines on here are extremely good. You’ll hear what I mean, or you can read what I mean via this write-up.
IOTA - Lous and The Yakuza (R&B, experimental rap) I have the hardest crush on Lous. Her power is in unwavering feminine energy. She’s beautiful. When Dilemme came out, it was on repeat. Her latest album reaches deep intimacy and depth. It reminds me how I’ve got enliven my French practice by referencing her lyrics. Passing along a write-up about the album here.
mortadella, a type of Italian deli meat embedded with pistachios, sandwich with a black coffee
reddish brown lipliner incorrectly, but deftly, used under the outer corners of my eyes
exploring record stores in new cities/neighborhoods - same goes for thrift ^u^
Here is some sweetness:
Inspired by Sally Wen Mao’s Ode to Emptiness
Friendsgiving in New Haven, finding home in one another. Jamaican jerk seasoned fries and cocktails perfect in its ginger-to-drink ratio. Experiencing a two-day-brine turkey made by the powerful Mikah. Receiving wisdom from Laurel while in passenger seat, en route to Target for butter board ingredients. Listening to their record collection while cooking together. Jo getting new jammies. We made a butter board lush with dill, sea salt, olive oil, parsley, pomegranate seeds, and red onion.
Our sorrows meeting one another as we caught up on time together, read one another’s tarot readings. Inviting a person’s vulnerability by showing your own remains one of the most sacred practices.
Spontaneously bouldering at Rossella’s local climbing gym, post-diner eggs & hash brown potatoes!!! Encouraging one another to “Go for it!”. Hearing “You got it” goes along way. It reminds you how, yes, you do have it in you to give it a go. This knowing is warming.
The nights I crashed on my friends’ couch, Remi the cat would join me, sleeping in between my thighs or belly. The tenderness. I felt like Totoro and Remi was Mei. I could’ve cried.
Learning how to play backgammon with a person I’d just met. We were so nice to each other, encouraging when either made a smart move, and advising potential strong options for strategy. It was a cute time!
The father and son (~7/8 years old) in the airport shuttle looking at each other while snacking on some breakfast granola bars. It was a look and shrug of:
Dad -“Not bad, is it?”
Son - “Mhm. Not bad!”
Images in the tree bark:
Nica’s Market. A deli you can trust with your forever lunches, forever deli meat needs. Impressive hot-n-ready coffee selection up front at the cashier’s.
Remi noticing that challah bread is no different from her toe beans.
Hip to backgammon now!
Views from the climbing gym, a spotted pocket for a book of choice.
Beobab.tree tea leaves from a blend at Basil Restaurant, New Haven. It wasn’t jasmine like I expected. It tasted of raisins. Super pleasant surprise.
I hope your day is kind to you and you are kind to you.
Warmed,
Isabel
